De la croseta la afacere

From crochet hook to business

Mestesugul pe care-l practica Violeta Palii este socotit de catre unii etnologi minor, desi in Basarabia are o extindere neintalnite in Romania.
Some ethnologists consider the handicraft practiced by Violeta Palii is a minor one though it is largely extended in Bassarabia as compared to Romania. Violeta Palii does not only crochet; practically she started from this handicraft to integrate later on in a real garment concept. Seeing her present creations we could say that Violeta Palii is a traditional fashion designer, especially the collections named suggestively “Treasure” which brought her certain fame in the field.
She learned the handicraft from her grandmother Maria; from her mother, Tatiana Palii, she learned other useful things and she presently works shoulder to shoulder with her sister. This is an example of how the family may originate and develop courageous ideas.
However for Violeta Palii UMPM played a role as important as the one of her family; she entered in the big family of artisans, managing to gain their trust along the seven years and become thus a member of the Association Board and at the same time its secretary, an honorable position which requires certain sacrifices.
From 2001 on she participated in many fairs, festivals and exhibitions, especially in Bassarabia, but also in Russia and Romania; she received diplomas, distinctions and titles which encouraged her to continue; the most precious distinctions received suggest the strong relationship that Violeta Palii has with the business environment, her dream being extremely ambitious: to transform the ancient handicraft in a modern and profitable business! Here you have this dream depicted by her own words: “To bring artisan’s products on the market as competitive products, managing also to keep their traditional artistic value”
Her plans are as ambitious as her ideals: “The business figures are continuously increasing and I am thinking of entering the Euopean market, keeping however the local one. In 10 years maximum I will have an international brand and in 20 years time the Republic of Moldavia will be the greatest handicraft exporter”!
These audacious assertions make us believe that the handicrafts from Prut transborder area are in safe hands. Violeta Palii’s apparently antagonistic nature is found also in her special clothes; tradition and innovation share parts, a woman who wears a dress from her collection has the chance of being as special as its creator is. In fact, her motto (“Think globally, act locally”) fits the way she sees the development of handicrafts: “The artisans should educate people so that they’d be able to appreciate value and tradition in order to maintain the historical line, but to be also sensitive and flexible to the major changes in our society and in modern people’ mentality; in this a way a tradition which refuses to adapt is simply, rejected, lost”.
